VIWMA ADDRESSES DISTRIBUTION OF WASTE HAULERS VENDOR PAYMENTS

(US Virgin Islands) – The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) was created in 2004 to provide solid waste and wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal services to protect public health and preserve the environment of the U.S. Virgin Islands. VIWMA considers our contracted solid waste service providers as a valuable part of our operations and an asset to the Territory.

Since late October, when Governor Bryan signed into law Act 8381, appropriating $15 million to pay outstanding VIWMA vendor debts, almost every solid waste service provider who performed services since the Authority’s inception has contacted our Solid Waste or Finance division and made some claim of outstanding accounts payable owed to their company. VIWMA and its Board of Director’s has a responsibility to be good stewards of the Government of the Virgin Island’s limited financial resources, and as such has been working with contractors to review invoices and determine their validity.

The Act states that “Not later than 10 (ten) days after the enactment of this act, the Waste Management Authority shall submit a list of all waste haulers and landfill operators owed outstanding vendor payments along with the debt owed to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Not later than 30 days after the funds appropriated have been allotted, the Waste Management Authority shall provide a report to the Legislature documenting the payment to the waste haulers and landfill operators.”

VIWMA has been in constant communication with OMB to ensure that approved invoices for all vendors will be finalized and submitted for payment within the timeframe outlined in the bill.

VIWMA ADVISES COMMUNITY OF THE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF BROOKMAN BIN SITE

(St. Thomas, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) advises the community of the temporary closure of the Brookman Bin Site. The VIWMA and Department of Public Works are working to clean the area of illegally dumped motor and cooking oil.

The Authority is requesting residential users of that bin site to utilize the Nadir, Thomasville, or Bolongo Bin Sites and Bovoni Landfill pending completion of clean-up.

The Authority reminds businesses that it is illegal to dispose of motor and cooking oil at residential bin sites.  Virgin Islands law requires businesses to contract a licensed and approved hauler to dispose of their waste oil. Violators are subject to a fine of not less than $1,000 and/or 180 days imprisonment.

Illegal dumping is harmful to human health and the environment.

The VIWMA thanks the community for their cooperation and patience.

To report a solid waste or wastewater emergency, call the VIWMA 24-Hour Hotline at 844-WMA-USVI (844-962-8784).
