Solid Waste
Solid Waste is any garbage or refuse resulting from industrial, commercial, agricultural or community activities.
The Division of Solid Waste is responsible for the collection, storage, treatment and disposal of municipal solid waste and the management of two landfills and a transfer station. What is municipal solid waste? This is the garbage that is generated from households…your everyday trash from your daily lives…cardboard boxes, pampers, papers, food scraps, plastic bottles, old clothes, anything that you throw away.
The VIWMA provides in-house and contract collection services through curbside and bin site drop-off points. These services include the maintenance of the bin sites and the provision of collection services in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner to ensure the public’s health and safety. Residents who receive curbside collection are required to place their household waste in an acceptable receptacle with a secure cover and place it along the curbside adjacent to their property on the designated days for collection in their neighborhood. Apartment house owners and commercial and industrial businesses are required to employ a private hauler to collect and dispose of their waste.
The Anguilla Landfill on St. Croix and the Bovoni Landfill on St. Thomas are currently under contract management services supervised by VIWMA personnel. The St. John Susannaberg Transfer Station is presently co-managed by the Department of Public Works and the VIWMA. The regulatory guidelines established by law must be complied with. There are certain guidelines that exist for the proper operation of a landfill. These include the monitoring of leachate, gas and groundwater monitoring. The current acceptance policy for waste at the landfills lists what is now accepted at the landfill.
