Message from the Executive Director

"Fellow Residents and Visitors to the United States Virgin Islands, America’s Paradise
The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority Family continues on our newly-begun journey to sustainability with great expectations for the shift in personal responsibility that is paramount in our collective efforts to Preserve [our] Paradise. Indeed, it will take no less than the united strength of us all to balance the scales between those who disregard public health and our environment and those who will not stand by and accept that threat. Our environment sustains our economy and our health and well being. We must pay it back and pay it forward for our future families.
Our vision is one where waste water flows undetectably under our streets and roads into and out of our pump stations with no odors and no significant storm water entry to our new state-of-the-art treatment facilities and our refurbished conventional treatment plants producing biosolids and discharging an alternate water resource for agricultural, commercial, industrial, and other beneficial uses.
Our vision is one where every generator of solid waste is an educated and informed consumer who reduces, recycles, and reuses solid waste and who properly disposes of special wastes such as household hazardous waste, used oil, electronic waste, batteries, and scrap tires. Our vision is that the availability of these valuable recovered materials stimulates new local service providers to enter into the recycling and remanufacturing industries.
In keeping with our mission statement, we have constructed four (4) new state-of-the-art treatment facilities, upgraded the major pump stations on St. Croix, evaluated sewer pipe conditions territory-wide, advertised for island-wide manhole rehabilitation and repair on St. Croix, and commenced design of two major force main replacements projects. An automated preventative maintenance program designed to increase efficiency, reduce downtime, and protect our assets will be implemented in the near future.
The new transfer station on St. John and the landfill compliance measures at both active landfills, one on St. Croix and one on St. Thomas, are in the design phase. The Anguilla Landfill on St. Croix is slated to stop receiving waste by the end of 2009. The solicitation for new solid waste treatment and disposal capacity to replace this landfill is in progress. The design-build proposals for the first Convenience Center for solid waste disposal on St. Croix have been evaluated. New solid waste collection equipment has been procured.
New Waste Water Rules and Regulations (R&R) will be promulgated and Solid Waste R&R will soon be available for public comment. Compliance and Enforcement activities have been vigilant and will be increasing as public education goals are met. We ask that you be equally mindful and vigilant of those who violate the Rules and Regulations because we are counting on your support and assistance to slowly turn back the tide of disregard.
As we continue to invest in the proud men and women who work daily to achieve our collective goals and objectives, our operations and maintenance expenses, our capital infrastructure costs, and our public education and enforcement strategies, we seek your support in the form of Environmental and Waste Water User Fees for the services we provide now and will expand in the future. The sustainability of the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority is that the Preservation of Paradise is everyone’s responsibility.
As you navigate through our site, any feedback and input that will help us meet the high mandates you have set for us are welcomed and, indeed, encouraged."
