Division of Environmental Programs

One of the planning components of the VI Waste Management Authority is the Environmental Programs Division. This division is responsible for research, data collections, planning development and implementation of programs that support the Solid Waste and Wastewater Divisions. The Environmental Programs Division has incorporated the former Anti-Litter & Beautification Programs and developed new initiatives in special waste. The division also provides support services, such as environmental education, outreach, grant research and writing, and project coordination.

More specifically, Environmental Programs assists in the negotiations with compliance on special waste, such as, used motor oil, scrap metal, scrap tires, and lead acid batteries. Technical support with regulatory compliance is provided for landfill air emissions, landfill operations, site remediation, and management plans.

Additionally, environmental educational activities are coordinated through this Division. Local schools are introduced to the VIWMA through personal visits and presentations by VIWMA staff. Students are encouraged to participate in activities related to environmental issues that affect the Virgin Islands.

The Division participates in various community programs through sponsorship and grants. Annual events include: Eco-Fair on St. Croix, Spruce Up For the Holidays, Community Enrichment Grant Programs, Clean and Preen Saturday Youth Program, Greenhouse Program, Aluminum Can Collection Contest, and Youth Environmental Summer Employment Programs.
