The hilly terrain and narrow roadways that are name-sake to our islands tend to hamper the ease of house-to-house solid waste collection for many residents. Historically, roadside waste disposal sites have been put in place to provide residents and visitors alike the convenience of solid waste disposal.
Currently, there are four (4) disposal sites on St. Croix, twenty-six (26) sites on St. Thomas, and twenty-eight (28) bin sites on St. John. These disposal sites are for use for the disposal of household waste only. Businesses are mandated by local law to utilize a contracted private hauler to collect and properly dispose of their waste. Businesses, including apartment buildings that have more than 4 apartments, are required to take their waste directly to either the St. Croix or St. Thomas landfill or the transfer station on St. John.
