Scrap Metal is a term used to describe recyclable materials left over from large appliances, vehicles, building supplies, and other surplus metal materials. This could include such items as:
Stoves
Air conditioners
Refrigerators*
Junked vehicles
Metal siding
Shower stalls
Microwaves
Other metal items
*Note: Refrigerators and freezers must have freon removed prior to disposal.
Scrap metal is not waste! It is very valuable in global commodity markets, and has a very high potential for reuse and recycling. By recycling these metals, the V.I. is reducing the need to extract virgin metals from the earth through destructive mining practices. VIWMA works with many partners to ensure that valuable scrap metal is not just left sitting unused.
Scrap metal can be brought to the metal recycling areas at the landfills on St. Croix (Anguilla) and St. Thomas (Bovoni). For more information on scrap metal disposal and recycling please contact us: St. Croix 712-4962 and St. Thomas 777-3073.
Old Vehicles on St. Thomas
Residents of St. Thomas are advised to bring junked and abandoned vehicles to the Bovoni Landfill. The Authority's contractor, VI Recycling, only accepts junked and abandoned vehicles on Mondays through Fridays from 7:00AM to 4:00PM. No junked or abandoned vehicles will be accepted at the Landfill on weekends of holidays.
As a reminder, all liquids, including oils, fluids and gasoline need to be removed from all vehicles prior to being brought to the Landfill for disposal. Please make sure that these materials are safety contained and brought to an appropriate handler, not dumped down the drain or sewer! Also, all tires and batteries are to be removed and properly disposed. Residents are advised and encouraged to properly dispose of scrap tires and lead acid batteries by returning them for reycling at participating garages and/or auto retail stores. Improper disposal of these items at public bin sites and illegal dump sites poses and unacceptable health and environmental risk and is strictly prohibited. Anyone caught disposing of these items illegally will be cited by the Authority's Enforcement Officers.
The VIWMA and the VI Abandoned Vehicle Task Force have joined efforts in reducing the number of dilapidated vehicles on our roadways and at our landfills by detoxifying, crushing and shipping vehicles off-island for recycling. On average, vehicles manufactured today are over 75% recyclable. Many vehicles still contain valuable elements such as copper (wiring), aluminum (engine and wheels), lead acid batteries, and steel; All of these can be recycled!
