There is more to aluminum can recycling than meets the eye. Were you aware that more than 50 percent of a new aluminum can is made from recycled aluminum? According to www.cancentral.com, consumers contribute to producing a quality, reusable container while cutting costs and reducing the demand on natural resources. Today, the aluminum beverage can represents top value for producers, consumers and solid waste managers. Doing your part to collect aluminum beverage cans, for recycling makes great environmental sense.

In commemoration of America Recycles Day, November 15th, the VIWMA, partners with the V.I. Department of Education annually, conducting the Don’t Trash Your Cans, Cash Your Cans! Aluminum Can Collection Contest in public and private elementary schools in the Virgin Islands. The response has been even greater with an annual increase in the number of participating schools. The entire community is encouraged to collect and recycle aluminum beverage cans and donate them to the school of their choice.

The month of November is proclaimed Virgin Islands Recycles Month annually. The VIWMA sponsors various activities during the month to educate residents and promote the benefits of recycling in the Territory.

The VIWMA encourages the community to recycle aluminum cans by taking their collections to Sanitary Trashmoval Services (STS) on St. Thomas, 340-775-3670 and the Boys and Girls Club in Anna's Hope in Christiansted on St .Croix.
