Temporarily Suspended

During the summers, the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority sponsors our annual territorial youth summer employment programs. The Youth Environmental Summer Program (YES) employs 125 students and 12 counselors per District for six weeks. This program was previously sponsored by the Antilitter and Beautification Commission and has been in existence for more than 11 years. This summer program provides students and staff with environmental education activities, field trips, hikes, and training programs to develop their skills. Acceptance into the program depends on meeting several criteria which include the following:

  1. Application Process
  2. Intake, selection and interview phase
  3. Orientation of staff
  4. Orientation of students and workshops
  5. Worksite activities
  6. Close-out awards-activity day
  7. Close-out phase

The YES Program is more than a summer employment opportunity. It is most notably known for increasing environmental awareness among our youth by engaging them in physical clean-up and beautification of schools, beaches and other areas throughout the community. It not only provides work experience for participants, it provides career development information and instills positive life skills and work ethics. In the near future, we expect to extend our summer program into an after school maintenance program. During this maintenance program, participants will be responsible for maintaining the areas that were beautified during the summer program.
