Commercial waste is generated by a commercial or industrial business. Businesses are not allowed to dispose of their waste in public bin sites or house-to-house collection receptacles. Businesses owners are required to use a licensed and permitted waste hauler to remove their waste and dispose of it properly. A list of currently permitted waste haulers can be obtained by contracting the Division of Compliance Management and Environmental Enforcement at 340-776-4844 Ext. 292 on St. Thomas/St. John/Water Island or at 340-712-4956 on St. Croix. Those business owners found to be in violation, can be cited by the VIWMA's Enforcement Officers.
Citations start at $1,000.00 per violation.
Failure to pay the citation or to appear in court can lead to the business owner's arrest, as these violations are deemed criminal offenses. Failure to pay the citation can also lead to being imprisoned for no more than 180 days.
