Governing Board of the VI Waste Management Authority

The Board of Directors for the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority is comprised of seven (7) members who are appointed by the Governor. Three (3) members are appointed from government departments or agencies, with one being the Commissioner of the Department of Public Works. The remaining four (4) members cannot be employees of the local or federal government and are approved by the VI Legislature. Of the four non-governmental members, one (1) is a resident of St. Thomas, one (1) is a resident of St. John, and two (2) are residents of St. Croix. At least one of these four members is to have business experience; one is to have engineering or construction or construction management experience; and, one is to have environmental engineering experience.

The term of office for each non-governmental member is three (3) years; provided, however, that for the first appointments made, one will be for one year, two for two years, and one for three years. Non-governmental members can be reappointed and may be removed for cause by the Governor. The term of office for the governmental members, who serve at the pleasure of the Governor, shall be as long as they remain in their respective governmental positions, provided that they are unclassified employees, or for a term of three years if they are classified employees. Any person appointed to fill a vacancy occurring prior to the expiration of the term for which their predecessor was appointed will be appointed only for the remainder of that term.
